WhatsApp for Android update adds new group mute settings

WhatsApp for Android update adds new group mute settings

WhatsApp has released an update for Android (v2.11.230) that brings with it the highly requested group muting settings.

Anyone who has used WhatsApp groups would know how annoying some of them can get over time and there was no way to permanently mute them. The latest update, however, adds some new options that lets you mute a group beyond one week, all the way up to a century.
More importantly, WhatsApp has also added the ability to hide notifications as before, even if you muted a group, the phone would still show silent notifications. Now, if you uncheck ‘Show notifications’, the group would be totally silent.
Another change in the update is a camera icon next to the text input field in chats that lets you quickly take a photo and send to your contact, similar to Snapchat.
The update has not been pushed to the Play Store, yet, and you will have to go to the WhatsApp website (link below) to manually download and install the update.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ for iOS and Android game review

The Amazing Spider-M‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ for iOS and Android game review

Another superhero movie, another superhero movie tie-in game. We see these kind of games pop up quite frequently and rarely do they ever do justice to the movie, let alone to gaming. But people keep making them because, well, who doesn’t like money?

The previous The Amazing Spider-Man game for mobile was mediocre at best (to be honest, the movie wasn’t significantly better). This year, we have a sequel for the movie that promises to be bigger and better than the last one and like clockwork, there is a game that goes along with it. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game is now out on iOS and Android and we decided to take a look at it, expectations set firmly to ‘Low’.

Gameplay

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees the return of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, solving crimes and taking out bad guys before bed time. The story of the game is of course based on that of the movie, with a few extra things thrown in for good measure.
The basic gameplay should be familiar to anyone who’s played the Batman Arkham series on PC or consoles. You enter a mission, which is usually saving someone or solving some crime, and then go to the locations marked on the map. There, you will usually face off against bad guys. The combat is similar to the Batman games, where you just mash one button to relentlessly hit the enemies. There is a button that you push whenever an enemy around you is about to attack (indicated by red markings above him) and you dish out a quick response. There is not a lot here to do other than keep hitting the attack button, which keeps the combat fairly simple and straightforward. Occasionally you will come across some boss fights, which are a combination of hitting the attack button mixed with some quick-time events. Again, fairly simple and straightforward affair.
Other than going around punching people, there is also a lot of web slinging to do in this game. This has always been the most fun part of Spider-Man games and that’s the case here as well. It doesn’t really make a lot of sense because you can just release a web mid-air and it will just stick to some invisible object in the sky and let you move around, but it is a lot of fun. Also, since it is Spider-Man we are talking about here, you don’t have to worry about falling because even if you do he lands safely on his feet like a cat.
Being Spider-Man also means you can stick to practically any surface. You can literally run up and down vertical surfaces like it’s no big deal or just stick to a wall with your back and admire the view.
To enhance his abilities, the game offers you these serums that you can use but unfortunately, they all cost in game currency and when you are out of those you have to pay real money. There are also extra suits here to unlock, which cost a LOT of money, more than the game itself, for that matter. As is usual for Gameloft games, there are a lot of IAPs here and they are priced far too high for anyone to take them seriously.
One absurd drawback with the game is that it does not work offline, so you need a constant internet connection to play. If you’re on a device without 3G, such as the iPad or the iPod touch, and out of Wi-Fi range, you can’t even start the game.

Graphics and Sound

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features some sharp new graphics that are a significant improvement over the previous game. Things such as Spider-Man’s suit and the details in the buildings look great. The city itself is also quite big and there are plenty of places to explore. Only thing letting the visuals down are the spotty textures and some low resolution assets in places and an inconsistent framerate, even on something as powerful as the iPad Air. Other than that, the visuals are pretty good.
Sound-wise, you have to deal with the game’s less than spectacular voice acting and dialogue. The dialogs are all cheesy and Spider-Man’s wisecracks get tiring very quickly. The voice acting isn’t particularly great, either. Overall, nothing too impressive on the sound front.

Verdict

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a decent game in and of itself, even if you ignore the movie tie-in. There is a good amount of fun to be had here, particularly when you are swinging around the city, which is by far the most entertaining mode of transportation in any game. The rest of the gameplay is adequate, if not equally exciting. The visuals are good but the voice acting and dialogs aren’t. Overall, a decent game for the price but would be a better deal after it goes on sale.
Rating: 6.5/10
Pros: Web slinging is fun, simple and intuitive combat, attractive visuals
Cons: Framerate issues with occasional spotty textures, overpriced in-app purchases, tacky dialogs and voice acting, does not work without internet connection

HTC One Tips, Tricks and Hidden Features

HTC One Tips, Tricks and Hidden Features

The HTC One is one of the best smartphones in the world, not only because of its excellent performance and great camera but also because of its awesome features.
Although, HTC One isn’t as tough as the features are in the Samsung Galaxy S4, but this list will help you unlock some of the top HTC One hidden features. If you are own One, the following tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your new device.
All of these hidden HTC One features should work on all the smartphone variants of HTC One, including AT&T and Verizon HTC One.

Touch to Capture Photos

The HTC One comes with an amazing camera which can be used to focus perfectly before you capture the objects. When you tap on the screen you can select the object to focus and everything else in the background would get blurred. That’s a feature which you would generally find on the DSLR’s camera and surprisingly this is available on this phone.
But if you prefer taking photos with a tap on the screen, then you can enable that option through the Settings in the Camera App. Go to Settings -> Shutter Option -> Touch to Capture and turn it on.

Quickly Switch Apps

You can quickly switch between apps without exiting to the home screen. To do that double tap on the Home button and it would show you a new window with some applications which were accessed recently. This is a pretty useful feature when you have to multitask in HTC One.

Quickly Switch Cameras

If you would like to Switch from the Front Camera to the Back Camera, you don’t have to go through the settings but simply swipe your fingers on the screen. This is yet very simple but useful feature to quickly switch the camera.

Remove BlinkFeed from Home Screen

BlinkFeed is a feature on HTC Sense5 that grabs all news from various sources and aggregates it onto one handy home screen panel for easy reading. If you don’t like staying current on news, you probably want to get rid of it. While you can not completely remove blinkfeed from your phone but you can hide it from showing up in the first screen. To do so, simply long-press on any homescreen and then long-press the thumbnail at the top of the screen. You’ll see the option ‘set as home’ appear. Select any screen other than Blinkfeed and you are done.

Use the HTC One as a Remote Control

The HTC One includes an IR blaster, which allows the user to control their TVs and cable box from across the room. Plus, with HTC’s Sense TV app, you can easily see what’s on using a slick interface and tap one of your favorite shows to start watching. You can also use the app to control your TV’s volume, record shows and more.
To use it, tap on Apps -> TV and follow the instructions to pair devices to your HTC One.

Modifying LED notifications

It’s pretty easy to modify the notifications flash on your phone. This is possible by going to the settings and changing the default settings. Tap on Settings -> Display, gestures & buttonsand tap on ‘Notification flash’. Now choose which types of notification you want the LED to flash for.

Use Magnifier Glass to Select Text

If you are found it difficult to select text and tapping it correctly, you can enable an option to show a magnifier glass when selecting text. To do this, go to Settings->Accessibility and check the show magnifier option.

Enable Car mode

HTC has a car mode that show you the options which you generally use while driving in a better display. It is not only easy to reach and select but also shown in large font. This means that you get the Navigation Dealer, Music and Speak features in a different UI which are easy to use while driving.

Hide SMS Messages

There are times when you want to hide some of your SMS Messages in your phone. Usually you will need to download third-party app from Play Store to hide selected SMS messages but HTC One has made it easier for you. HTC One comes with an option of securing your important or private SMS from everyone.
You will be required to setup a password before using this feature. Tap on Messages ->General -> Settings -> Password and enter Password. Once the password is set, go back to the main messages application screen and long press on the message that you want to hide. You would get the option to Move to Secure Box.

Save Power with Sleep mode

Sleep mode will automatically switch off 3G connectivity when it’s not needed. While it may not seem like much, this can actually save you a ton of power. To turn it on, go to Settings->Power->Sleep Mode.

Snap Animated Photos with Zoe mode

Zoe mode is a key feature of HTC one. It takes a short video clip that can be sliced up into twenty images. To enable zoe mode, tap the small camera icon on the left side of the screen. This will turn on HTC Zoe and show it at the bottom of the screen. Now just tap the shutter to take animated photos.

How to Track Lost Android Phone and Tablet

How to Track Lost Android Phone and Tablet

Your Android gadgets are the most important things in your life. It contains all your important contacts and information. If you lose your equipment, you will be losing all those sweet memories with the photos and video. But there is some good news to android phone/tablet users, you can now easily find or at least know where your missing phone is with or without using android application.
Let’s first look at the way of finding your lost phone which doesn’t contain any app installed on it.

Use the IMEI Number

Every android phone carries a unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity Number). It will be printed at the back of your device. If you are unable to find the number, you have to launch your phone app and dial the number *#06#. This will give you the IMEI number of your phone. Store this number in a safe place so that it helps you in locating your phone when it is lost.
When you file a complaint, this number has to be added in the report. Your service provider uses this number to track your phone and tell you where it is. No matter if the person using the phone is using a different SIM card or has switched off the phone. Once the device is traced, you can request your service provider to block it from using.
This is one of the easy ways of locating your lost Android phone or tablet.

Plan B

Another way of tracking your lost Android gdget in no time is through Plan B app. This app does not require you to install any recovery software previously but still helps in finding your lost phone. All you need to do is log on to your Google play account. Lookout mobile security offers free software called Plan B. Download the software from play store to your phone. This will be possible only if your phone is within the Internet coverage area. Wait for some time and then send the keyword “locate” without the quotes through SMS to your phone. And a map showing where your equipment is will be sent to your Gmail account. This app is very much useful in situations where you don’t have IMEI number.
If you have installed and configured any of these below android software previously, there is good chance of finding it.
You can log on to Google Play store > My Android Apps, on your computer and check if you have installed any of the following apps previously.

Lookout Security and Antivirus

Lookout is the best android app for security and antivirus. So far, it has received millions of downloads. Just recall if you have installed this on your phone.
If you have activated the option “Missing Device” in this app, it is easy to find your device. If you have also enabled “Signal Flare” option, you can trace the last known location of your android device. This is helpful in case your phone battery is dead or tablet is switched off.
Now sign in Lookout to locate your device. The map shows the location of your phone. If you are at a short distance from the tablet, you can choose Scream option to make a loud noise to find it.

Android Device Manager

Google has recently released a new locator feature for Android gadgets called Android Device manager, which helps its users locate their lost or stolen phones and tablets. It functions in the same way as Lookout and Samsung’s “Find My Mobile”. Here’s how to use Android Device Manager.
Go to the Google Settings app, then select Android device manager. By default the locator feature is activated but to activate remove data wipe, select the box next to “Allow remote factory reset”, then select “activate”.
To use this feature, open the site https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager and sign in to your Google account. You may be prompted for permission to allow Android Device Manager to use location data. Select the Accept tab to continue.
Now you will be provided with a map that shows the location of your device along with other details such as the name of the place, when it was last used and more. The location data doesn’t help you if your phone is misplaced somewhere in your home. Instead of making a call to your phone using other’s phone, you can call your phone directly from Android Device Manager. This will make your device to ring with high volume for 5 minutes, even if it’s in silent or vibrate mode.
One feature that is missing in Android Device Manager is remote locking, which can be useful in preventing a stranger from accessing your data, while you’re tracking its location.
Apart from these, there are other apps such as Android Lost, Where do My Droid and GadgetTrak that help you in finding your lost Android phone/Tablet.

10 Easy Tips to Extend Your Android Phone’s Battery Life

10 Easy Tips to Extend Your Android Phone’s Battery Life

android battery saving tips

Unlike standard mobile phones, Android phones are load with a ton of functions and features like gaming, web browsing, media playing, GPS, video calls, etc that blow away any other cellphones on the market.
However, many of the features available on Android devices can cause the battery to be drained very quickly. Therefore, Android users have to be smart and proactively manage the battery in their phone. There are many ways to improve battery life on Android phones. Here I’ve listed ten simple tips that may help you to extend your android phone’s battery life.
  1. Reduce screen brightness
One the biggest battery hogs on your android device is the screen. The brighter the screen, the more battery power it requires. Reducing the screen brightness can conserve more of your battery.
  2. Don’t use Live Wallpapers
Even though using live wallpaper can make your android phone look cool and attractive, but they drain a quite amount of battery. By changing live wallpaper to normal wallpaper can slightly extend your phone’s battery life.
  3. Use black wallpaper or black theme
Since black color is very dark, the screen don’t have to spend too much energy for creating colors and therefore, it uses less battery.
  4. Remove home screen widgets that you don’t need
The more widgets placed on the home screen, the more RAM they took for running the applications, resulting in more battery consumption. So trying not to go overboard with these.
  5. Keep your battery away from extreme heat
Make sure that your battery isn’t exposed to extreme heat as battery will lose it’s capacity when hot.
  6. Disable Auto Sync
Many Applications like Gmail and other email apps eat up a lot of battery due to auto sync features. When push e-mail is not required, turn off the auto sync and manual synchronization when needed. To turn of auto sync, go to Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> uncheck the ‘Auto-sync’.
  7. Turn off WIFI when not in use
The other kind of network connection that the android phone can connect to is Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is available where there’s a hotspot – not virtually everywhere like 3G. If you turn on the WiFi connection, it will keep looking for a Wi-Fi hotspot which may drain your battery life. So, keep Wi-Fi turned off, unless you’re using it right now.
  8. Disable haptic feedback
Haptic feedback gives touchscreen keyboards the sensation of a physical layout through small vibrations. While this feature can make typing feel more natural, it can affect your battery life. To disable haptic feedback, go to Settings -> Sound. Scroll down to system and uncheck Haptic feedback.
  9. Turn off location services
Location services such as GPS and Google Maps are very useful when it comes to find directions or locations, but they are also consume a lot of battery. So unless you are using it right now, keep them turned off.
How to turn off location services:
    • Tap Settings -> Location services.
    • Uncheck all the the boxes available.
  10. Disable auto updates for widgets
Home screen widgets like weather updates and news get their information by pinging a corresponding website automatically. Some widgets allow you to disable automatic updates, while others have to be removed entirely.
To disable a widget’s automatic updates:
    • Open the widget and press Menu -> Settings.
    • Tap on auto refresh and choose None
If you can’t customize the widget and it’s something you can live without, we suggest you to remove it from the home screen. To do that:
    • Press and hold down the widget until it is highlighted.
    • Drag the widget to the trash icon to remove it from the home screen.
